Making good use of a little corner
Look at the girl in the picture, she is planting some tomatoes in little corner between two roads in the middle of Tokyo. Isn’t it amazing? She cares about that little place of land lost in Tokyo’s immensity, and what is more amazing is that she doesn’t seem worried about people or dogs destroying her tomatoes and her lavender.
This is a picture from the other side of the same piece of land, so you can see how other people is also planting and making good use of it.

Tornadoes, You wouldn’t say that if you knew that Griffith Park was covered in guerilla gardens, some of them were named after their caretakers.
I think the fire last year wiped a lot of them out.

There are hundreds of gurellia gardeners in LA. There is a place called “farmlab” that built an enormous cornfield in downtown LA next to railroad tracks.
There are almost 100 sites in LA alone that are “community gardens”, and more and more guerilla gardeners are coming into the fold every day.
It’s nice what this one woman is doing, but we also have hundreds here doing the same, and we shouldn’t be discredited!

I’ve seen this done before, in San Francisco. It was in the Haight-Ashbury district. There were flowers and vegetables planted around the trees in the sidewalk, and surrounded with chicken wire or little fences to keep them safe.

This is just a typical yet fundamental difference in the mind set of East V West when it comes to the planet.
The West consider space to be nothing more than building sites, to further perpetuate the ridiculousness of this shitty Capitalist existence, and yet we buy house plants because it is good for the air, lol! JOKERS WE ARE!!!
Yet our Eastern counterparts however, see the tiniest little space as a haven for nature, creating bio-diversity and even sustaining harvestable crops from such pursuits, So what do we have to learn? I ask myself,- What can they learn from us? Is the reply!

I know where I would rather be, what do you think?

That’s Tokyo for ya’ … People here have an amazing respect for others peoples property. Once, I left my key in my scooter on a fairly trafficked road. Guess what? The next day, the scooter was still there … With the keys neatly arranged on the seat!

uhm - this is all over Tokyo - it’s not really that uncommon. A lot of the apartments have mini gardens - and I’ve seen these little mini gardens all over the place - especially in Meguro.

This is lovely–and it did bring back so many memories of my 3 years in Japan, though I was in Sendai, a couple hours north of Tokyo.
I find Aaron Greeners’ east/west comment a bit sweeping; one thing that interested me, living in Japan, was that there was in fact a lot of litter in some “unclaimed” places, contrary to western stereotypes, and plenty of places that went uncared for. But once a person or group had a committment or responsibility to a space, it would be kept pristine.
I love Per-Ole Lind’s story about the keys. We found there were two exceptions to the general Japanese respect for other people’s property: bicycles and umbrellas. These seemed to be treated as communal, and if you left one around, it would be picked up by the next passer-by who needed it. At least once, and I think twice, we found a missing bicycle down at the train station, where someone had left it after borrowing it. But leaving a package, or your wallet, in a bicycle basket was a good as locking the bike: no one would touch it. Try that in L.A.

..Aaron Greener, are you listening to yourself? You speaking from a point of view of only knowing Japan and its cultures. You don’t know if in China, the Koreas, and southeast asia do this type of thing.
..Your just sounding like a Japanophile….please learn about the other east asian countries first.
I don’t know if they do this all around east asia, but I’m not going to generalize that entire area.
